The rise in drug menace in Manipur has made the movements against drugs meaningless, the All Manipur Women’s Social Reformation and Development Samaj or Nupi Samaj said on Tuesday.

“Manipuri women get strongly involved in various social movements to make a better future, but the consistent increase in drug menace in the state has led to spoil the society and make the movements meaningless,” All Manipur Women’s Social Reformation and Development Samaj president Thokchom Ramani said.

She was speaking at the observance of the 40th foundation day of Meira Paibi (Women Torch Bearer) held on Tuesday at its office at Lamphel, Imphal West.

Ramani said that Meira Paibi was formed on December 29, 1970, and the movement of ‘Nisha-Bandh’ (ban on liquor and contraband items) was started by Manipuri women to make the youths free from intoxicants and create a healthy society. She said that after the implementation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act 1957, atrocities and human rights violations were regular in the state and many young boys were arrested with no reason and later tagged them as militants.

To protect and prevent such atrocities, Meira Paibi was formed for the first time by Nupi Samaj. Since then, Meira Paibi began to be formed in almost all the localities, she added. The Meira Paibi have been playing an immense role in banning liquors and intoxicants that may spoil the youths, Ramani said.

She further said that Manipuri women have been giving their best efforts to create a good society from last many years, however, all the efforts go in vain with the increase in drug menace these days. Nevertheless, the women organisations will continue to fight against various social issues, she added.

“The government is shouting to control drug issues in the state but on the contrary, people who are arrested with drugs are hardly punished. It shows that the government is indirectly supporting the drug business and this has made the ‘imas’ (mothers) of Manipur helpless to uproot the drug issue from the state,” Ramani lamented while appealing to the state government to carry out their mission of ‘war on drug’ sincerely and honestly.

Other presidium members who attended the function were president of Apunba Manipur Kanba Ema Lup (AMKIL), Lourembam Nganbi and president of Tammi Chingmi Apunba Nupi Lup, Soibam Momon Leima.
