Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday said that the northeastern state of Assam has embarked on a journey of peace and development under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and leadership of state Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The union minister was speaking during the launch of multiple development projects in Assam.

"Laid the foundation stone of various development projects today in Guwahati. Under the guidance of PM @narendramodi ji and leadership of CM Shri @sarbanandsonwal and Shri @himantabiswa the state of Assam has embarked on a journey of peace and development," Shah tweeted.

Addressing a public meting at Amingaon in Kamrup district, the union home minister said that the BJP-led government is giving priority to the Northeast and is focused on the development of the region, while alleging the Congress and Opposition parties in the state did nothing to save the youths from insurgency.

"Assam has witnessed several agitations over different issues in which hundreds of youths were killed, disturbing the state's peace and halted development in the Northeast region," Shah said.

The Modi-led BJP government has ensured that separatist factions in the Northeast join the mainstream, the union home minister said, while referring to the recent Bodoland Territorial Council polls.

Shah said that 80 per cent polling took place without a single incident of bloodshed in the recently concluded Bodoland elections, which he termed as only a semi-final. The union minister said that final is ahead referring to the state legislative elections  scheduled for April, 2021.

During his visit to Assam as part of his two-day visit to the Northeast, Shah launched several development projects worth Rs 1176 crore, including, the foundation stones of Batadrava Than, second Medical College in Guwahati and extending financial grants to 8,000 Namghars or Vaishnavite monasteries.

The union home minister is set to visit Manipur on Sunday.
