The dry winter days in most parts of India is often described as gloomy, smoggy, foggy, hazy, dusty and real cold. But these grey wintry days in December can be brightened up by some sweet fragrant flowers in riots of colour. All you have to do is create enough space for them to grow in plenty to pretty up the place.

Most winter flowers love the cold and bloom profusely in dewy days. One pretty winter flower that blooms in December in India is the modest little blue violet with heart-shaped leaves. They are also found to bloom in spring. Although blue violets are most common, there are yellow ones too.

This sweet-smelling violet, which is considered as ornamental flowers grown in gardens, spread well in moist soil and shade and can easily cover up your garden with full blooms in December, with little care.

The perennial plant, which got its name from an old French word violet and its scientific name is viola, falls under the Violaceae family. Violaceae is said to be the largest genus in the family, with around 600 species.

Mostly associated with love, this pretty little flower, with a sweet and lovely fragrance, is also said to represent spiritual wisdom, faithfulness and humility. According to tradition, it also symbolizes honesty, protection, dreams, healing, remembrance, determination, and even the idea of setting goals. 

One fascinating fact about the wild blue violet is that they fall under edible flowers. Violets have been cultivated since 500 BC, according to reports. According to Gardening Knowhow, both the leaves and flowers can be eaten. They can be used for garnishing salads and dishes and to flour cakes and tea. They are also used to make syrups.

Known to contain high amounts of vitamin C and vitamin A, violets are also known to have medicinal properties.

Besides the December bloom, Moonlight, Blackjack and Buttercup are among the popular types of viola that grow in any zone. Violets attract hummingbirds besides other pollinators like bees.
