The proscribed umbrella organisation CORCOM, while alleging the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth wing of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), of meddling into the work of the media on June 2, stated that the BJP has exposed its autocratic nature by challenging the media’s freedom of expression.

A release issued by media coordinator, M Sak-hen stated that the Media not only is an institute giving essential service to the society, but its freedom of opinion and freedom of expression has been protected by the Article-19 of the Universal Declarations on Human Rights (UDHR).

Though India claims to be the biggest democratic country in the world, the BJP government has been physically and morally oppressing the media, which is the fourth pillar of democracy, by gagging them while some of the mainstream media houses have been completely taken over and being used as their mouth piece, it said.

The recent activity of BJYM was an attempt to make their own gains by following the autocratic nature of BJP and its minions, the release said.

A month after Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister of India in June, 2014, he said, “Democracy will not survive if Freedom of Speech and Expression cannot be protected”, the release said.

However, how much the government of India has suppressed the media need not be pointed out, it added.  As per the World Press Freedom Index 2020, India holds the 142nd position among 180 countries, the release said. This clearly shows how much India respects the Media, it added.

The CORCOM holds its respect to the media houses and journalists who have been taking up duties to bring out the truth amid the oppressions and the ongoing conflict between India and Kangliepak (Manipur), the release said. The organisation also lauds the media fraternity of the world for keeping aside the risks and threats posed by COVID-19 pandemic and coming out to join the battle at the frontline, and upholding their work, it added.

CORCOM also has its highest respects especially to the journalists of the state for their sacrifices in upholding their duties amid the battle against the prevailing pandemic, it added.
