At least one person was killed and several others injured on Saturday in Tripura when police allegedly opened fire on Joint Movement Committee (JMC) members during a protest over mass resettlement of Bru refugees, according to reports.

The JMC has been spearheading the movement against the resettlement of Bru refugees in Kanchanpur sub-division in Tripura.

The protesters, according to the reports, who staged a protest on the National Highway- 8 on Saturday blocked the road in three places - Chamtilla, Pecharthal and Panisagar market area in Panisagar sub-division in North Tripura district.

The police opened fire on the agitating mob who allegedly started pelting stones and attempted to block the National Highway, the reports said.

Normal life in northern Tripura's Kanchanpur subdivision has been hit hard as the strike entered its sixth day on Saturday. The JMC, a platform of local Bengali and Mizo residents, had called for an indefinite strike from Monday, against the state and Central government's decision to rehabilitate around 35,000 Bru refugees. The refugees had fled to neighbouring Mizoram after an ethnic conflict in Tripura, in October 1997.
