Even as tension in the Mizoram-Assam border continues to prevail, the Hmar Students’ Association (HSA) on Thursday urged the Centre to immediately set up a Supreme Court-monitored Boundary Commission headed by the Chairman of Law Commission of India to resolve the Mizoram-Assam border dispute.

The situation is grim as the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), the apex student’s body of Mizoram, has imposed a counter-blockade on the National Highway-306, which links Mizoram with Assam.

Meanwhile, the HSA, in a press statement said the indigenously people living on the Assam-Mizoram border areas have no differences on the border issue. The Hmar students blamed the “illegal Bangladeshi immigrants” for the problems.

“Normal lives and essential services have been greatly disrupted on both sides of the border as a result of the border standoff. It is the poor, needy and downtrodden, who are now at the receiving end,” the HSA said.

The HSA then urged the Centre to deploy “neutral forces” (Central armed forces) along the disputed stretches of Mizoram-Assam border.

The HSA also urged the Central government to check anti-social elements and criminal activities along the border areas. The HSA accused the “illegal Bangladeshi immigrants” of indulging in criminal activities in the border areas.

Meanwhile, Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) president B. Vanlaltana told reporters that they were imposing the counter-blockade since October 21 evening at Vairengte area against blockade imposed by residents of Lailapur in Assam's Cachar district since October 16.
