ATSUM threatens stir if ADC election not held in time

The tenure of ADCs will end on November 30.

The All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur (ATSUM) has warned that the union along with its constituent units will initiate its own course of action if the state government fails to hold the Autonomous District Council (ADC) election in time as the tenure of ADCs will end on November 30.

Speaking to the media at its office in Adimjati Complex, Imphal on Monday, general secretary of the union SR Andria said that the state government should be held responsible for the outcome if at all the union launch an agitation.

He appreciated to the Hill Areas Committee (HAC) Manipur for their recommendation to the government for holding the ADC election in time. As such, ATSUM appealed to the state government to respect the decision of the HAC and conduct the election at the earliest.

“On January 16, 2020, the Hill Areas Committee had recommended for an extension of six months to the six autonomous district councils. Accordingly, the cabinet issued necessary orders extending tenure of ADCs in the state till November 30,” said Andria.

On October 8, 2020, the Hill Areas Committee Manipur in its meeting adopted a resolution and a proposal and recommendation was sent to the state government for holding the ADC election in time, he added.
