With the Election Commission of India (ECI) announcing poll date for 18 Rajya Sabha seats in seven states, Congress MLA K Meghachandra on Tuesday filed miscellaneous writ petition before the High Court of Manipur against seven Congress MLAs who defected from the party. Following it, the high court has preponed the date of hearing and listed the matter to be conducted on Wednesday, June 3.
Related to miscellaneous writ petition, MLA K Meghachandra stated that ECI has declared Rajya Sabha election for 18 seats, including one seat in Manipur to be held on June 19.
In view of the situation, miscellaneous petition has been filed before the high court to restrain Ngamthang Haokip, MLA of Saitu Assembly Constituency from entering the premises of the Legislative Assembly during the pendency of the writ petition and the disqualification petition pending before the Speaker.

K Meghachandra expressed gratitude to the high court for listing the miscellaneous petition on June 3. He said Congress Party has hope and believe in the High Court for justice.
The petition mentioned that the present disqualification case has been pending before the Speaker Tribunal since long and there is no likelihood of the same being decided before the expiry of the present legislative assembly. It also alleged that the secretary of Manipur Legislative Assembly is deliberately not deciding the present disqualification pending on undue advantage of the defected Indian National Congress MLA to BJP can be given to the candidate of BJP in the upcoming election scheduled to be held on June 19.
It may be recalled that ECI issued the biennial elections for 18 seats which was scheduled for March 26. This was deferred owing to prevailing unforeseen situation of public health emergency due to COVID-19 and related advisories in the country.
