The All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) Bishnupur District Committee celebrated the 31st students’ emancipation day at Moirang Multi-purpose Higher Secondary School.

AMSU president Peter Laishram unveiled the flag of the union and commemorated the death of three brave students by paying floral tributes to the departed souls, a release stated.

AMSU recalled the various activities taken up at the Moirang Multi-purpose Hr Sec School from 1973 to 1979 to develop the school into a wholesome and better school, it said.

It was then that Haobijam Ibohal, a student from Ningthoukhong, was shot death on September 30, 1973, the release said. The death of the student did not make the government budge to develop the school, it stated.

Later, students started agitating from May 26, 1979, including holding of hunger strikes. Moirang police arrested five students and locked them up in midnight making the students to protest more, asking for the release the students, it said.

However, police opened fire and two students Urikkhinbam Khelen and Kumam Sharat died in a lock-up cell, the release stated.

The students’ emancipation day is observed ever since by AMSU to commemorate that woeful day, it said, adding that the function was celebrated with lesser number of people as compared with before due to COVID-19 pandemic.
