A day after RIMS general OPD in Imphal was announced closed by the hospital authority, two boys' hostels of the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute Medical Science (JNIMS) in Imphal have been sealed.

The boys' hostels at JNIMS were sealed at around 9pm Tuesday after one of the hostellers’ mother tested positive for COVID-19.

However, Manipur COVID-19 common control room said, “Till date there is no evidence for community transmission in any part of the state”.

According to JNIMS hospital medical superintendent professor T Rajen, a final year medical student of the institute had been to his home in Thoubal district where he stayed with his mother from July 12 to 14 and he returned to the hostel on July 14. After he came back to the hostel, the student, an inmate of the boy’s hostel number 2 had visited his friends and shared a meal together at hostel number 3.

As the student's mother tested COVID-19 positive, the JNIMS administration issued an order for immediate sealing of the two hostels of the boys section. Accordingly, all entry and exit in these two hostels are strictly prohibited until further notice, said the professor.

A total of 53 medical students, who are staying at these two hostels, were tested for COVID-19 on Wednesday morning, as per the JNIMS medical superintendent’s instructions.
