Concerned over the apparent absence of the health minister since his submission of resignation earlier amid the surging number of COVID-19 cases in the state, Congress MLA Kh Joykisan on Friday urged L Jayantakumar to resume his official duty.

Speaking to the media at Thangmeiband, Imphal, Joykisan expressed concern that Manipur is likely to enter the stage of community spread very soon considering the sharp increase in number of COVID-19 cases. “However, it seems there is no health minister in the state,” he contended.

“It is not the time to take credit if there is any development and to stay away when something goes wrong, ” stated the Congress MLA.

While pointing out that the number of COVID-19 infected people have been increasing in Jiribam district and one doctor of JNIMS tested positive, Joykisan said that it is the responsibility of the health minister to monitor the alarming situation carefully.

“The health minister (Jayantakumar) should resume his work as a responsible minister by keeping aside the political turmoil,” he added.

Joykisan also said that even the chief minister is not taking any further steps regarding the increasing number of positive cases possibly due to the fear of central leaders in connection with the political crisis.

Jayantakumar used to chant slogans like “no retreat, no surrender” while fighting against COVID-19. These mere words are not enough. He should take necessary steps being a health minister, reiterated Joykisan.

Following reallocation of portfolios, deputy chief minister has started resuming his official duty. The health minister must also resume his official duty and take necessary steps to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, he added.
