ATSUM, ANSAM, KSO leaders arrested from Manipur's Nungba

The student leaders were arrested by a combined team of Nungba Police and Commandos at around 11.30 pm on Wednesday and brought to Imphal at around 4.30 am on Thursday.

As many as 11 executive members of the All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur (ATSUM), All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur (ATSUM) and Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO) were arrested on Wednesday night at Nungba, under Nungba Police Station in Noney district, Manipur, sources said.

The arrest was carried out in the wake of the indefinite economic blockade conducted by the tribal students bodies over the issue of HAC recoomended ADC Bill 2021.

The sources said they were arrested by a combined team of Nungba Police and Commandos at around 11.30 pm on Wednesday and brought to Imphal at around 4.30 am on Thursday. They are being kept at different police stations at Imphal, namely Imphal Police Station, Singjamei Police Station, City Police Station and Imphal West Police Station, the sources added.

The arrested persons are ATSUM president Paotinthang Lupheng , 47, of Churachandpur; ATSUM general secretary SR Andrea, 40, of Chandel; ATSUM secretary information, Khaiminlien Doungel, 32 of Kangpokpi; ATSUM secretary forest and environment, TP Dining, 28, resident of Tamenglong; ATSUM secretary rights and reservation Shimthar Jajo, 41, of Riha village, Kamjong;  ATSUM assistant secretary forest and environment Marankhai, 31, of Tushar village, Ukhrul;  ANSAM general secretary AC Thotso, 36, of Ringui village, Ukhrul;  KSO executive member S Tony, 37, of Yaingangpokpi; KSO joint secretary Thangmang, 29; joint secretary Assembly Affairs, ATSUM Mathew Rawangbei, 28, of Willong, Senapati, ATSUM assistant secretary information; Thoshrii, 28, of Makhan village, as per sources.

As the discussion between the state government and the agitating tribal student organisations over HAC recommended Manipur (Hill Areas) ADC Bill 2021 earlier failed to arrive at an agreeable solution, student bodies went ahead with its proposed 24-hour bandh in the hill districts of Manipur from midnight of November 19 while the indefinite economic blockade began on Monday, November.
