Four Manipur MLAs challenge disqualifications in High Court

The High Court bench comprising Justice Lanunsungkum Jamir and Justice A Bimol directed respondents of the three writ petitions to file counter-affidavits within 10 days and listed the matter on July 17.

Four MLAs of the Manipur Legislative Assembly have challenged their disqualifications and filed writ petitions before the High Court of Manipur. The High Court bench comprising Justice Lanunsungkum Jamir and Justice A Bimol directed respondents of the three writ petitions to file counter-affidavits within 10 days and listed the matter on July 17.

Writ petitions challenging the disqualifications was filed by Kshetrimayum Biren, Yengkhom Surchandra, Tongbram Robindro, Sanasam Bira against the Speaker disqualification judgment. Due to paucity of time, Tongbram Robindro’s writ petition was not put up before the High Court.

While Tongbram Robindro and Sanasam Bira have prayed for withdrawal of the writ petitions on the ground that they have filed another subsequent petition of challenging disqualification judgment which had registered as writ petitions (C). They further submitted that they had no knowledge about who had made the disqualification applications before the assembly speaker. The court has allowed the withdrawal of writ petitions.

In continuation, the High Court also took up the matter of Congress MLAs petitions filed for the disqualification of the remaining three MLAs who had not been disqualified by the speaker.

MLA K Ranjit, MLA Surajkuamr Okram and MLA K Meghachandra have filed for disqualifications of MLA O Lukhoi, MLA Paonam Brojen and Ngamthang Haokip.

The High Court have asked the petitioners to take steps for services of a notice on respondents by dasti service within two days. Thereafter, petitioners will file affidavits to that effect.
