Civil bodies offer candle light tribute to late Athuan Abonmai

The organisations demanded that the state government must find out why the security personnel who were witnessing the abduction of Athuan Abonmai remained a silent spectator to the incident.

Various civil organisations of Manipur offered a ‘candle light tribute' to late Athuan Abonmai at Haipou Jadonang Park, Keishampat Imphal on Monday.

The members of the organisations comprising of International Peace and Social Advancement, All Club Organisation Association and Meira Paibi Lup, People Action for National Democratic Movement, Indigenous People’s Association of Kangleipak, KANGLAMEI, Kangleipak Students Association and Kanglei Ima Lup held banner which read, ‘justice for Athuan Abonmai, messiah of peace and unity, candle light tribute and protest against the inhumane assassination of Oja Athuan Abonmai’.

A joint release by the mentioned organisations on Monday stated that they strongly condemned the inhumane and brutal assassination of one of state’s prominent leaders who has been known for his truthful comments and opinions on various political and social issues prevailing in the state from time to time.

The organisations also demanded that the state government must find out why the security personnel who were witnessing the abduction of Athuan Abonmai remained a silent spectator to the incident.

Athuan Abonmai who was working with a vision to bring peace and communal harmony among different communities, unity and also peace in the state shall remain in the history of the state.  

The organisations also expressed that they will extend support to the all activities initiated by the JAC against the Brutal Murder of Athuan Abonmai to deliver justice.

Students of Manipur University under the aegis of Manipur University Students Union also held a ‘candle light protest’ at the university main gate on Monday evening.

During the candle light protest, general secretary of MUSU Kangujam Nareshkumar said the union will also extend support to any initiatives of civil bodies in the state to deliver justice to Athuan Abonmai.

The general secretary said it is unfortunate that no individual or organisation involved in the death of Athuan has been arrested till date.

Pointing out that there were security personnel deployed just near the place where Athuan was abducted, he questioned whether there is no one to protect the public in the hill districts.
