Myanmar media group to collect folk music of northeast India
To promote friendship between Myanmar and northeast India and as an initiative to understand the music of northeastern states, Mezzima Media Group of Myanmar will be recording different folk songs of northeastern states in Manipur.
From June 22, Mezzima Media Group will start shooting and recording songs of different folk artists from northeastern states at Ibudhou Marjing Heingang, Imphal West Manipur. Their venture will end officially after a function, ‘A musical journey, Roots of North East Folk Music and Instrument’ festival at Jawaharlal Nehru Academy on June 26.
Department of Art and Culture Manipur, Manipur Tourism and Hero’s Foundation in collaboration with Mizzima media group Myanmar will be jointly organising the festival.
Renown folk musician, Guru Reuben Mashangva, ethno musicologist of Assam, Prashanna Gogoi, Altered folk independent solo artist of Karbi Anglong, Assam, Baba Phuninding Kathar, honorary artistic from Manipur, Mayamglambam Mangangsana, traditional folk performer of Manipur Dingbunglung Panmei, Bauginmuan Zaumi and friends along with other folk artist from northeast and Myanmar will be performing in the event.
Director of Art and Culture, Aribam Shivdas Sharma while briefing media persons regarding the festival informed that Mizzima Media Group Myanmar will be covering the artist and festival which will be later telecasted in Myanmar.
Saying that the festival will be a first of its kind in the State, Shivdas also said that the festival will be a platform to expose the rich cultural heritage of the northeastern region.
Editor in chief and managing director, Mizzima Media Group, Soe Myint informed that Mizzima Media group has been involved in promoting friendship and understanding between Myanmar and India, particularly between Manipur and Sagaing region of Myanmar.
He said, “With the festival, we are connecting northeastern states of India with Myanmar and it can promote friendship and understanding between the two regions and countries.”
Saying that both the countries have very similar cultural and historical heritage, Soe Myint also claimed that the similarities between the two countries were not utilized in the past for various reasons. But after the opening of international gateway in August last year through Moreh, Tammu border, there have been more activities bridging the gap between the two countries.
He said that Mizzima is also focusing on promoting better understanding through culture and further told that a friendly football match was also organised between Sagaing, Mandalay and Manipur recently. Some months ago, Mizzima Media Group also recorded videos of different foods of Manipur which were later broadcasted in Myanmar with subtitles, he added.
He further informed that the folk songs recorded will help the people of Myanmar to see and understand the folk music of northeastern states of India.
Football players from Manipur film industry and member of legislatives assembly from Sagaing region Myanmar will also be playing a football match in the month of October and fishes from Myanmar will also be displayed in Manipur in the same month.
