Organic pineapple processing unit inaugurated

Horticulture and Soil Conservation minister Thounaojam Shyamkumar today inaugurated Meira Foods organic pineapple processing unit at the Kuraopokpi Industrial Estate, Kakching district.
The organic pineapple processing unit is supported by the Manipur Organic Mission Agency (MOMA), department of Horticulture and Soil Conservation under Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North East Region (MOVCDNER), a scheme under the ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and financed by NEDFI (North East Development Finance Corporation), Manipur Branch.
Speaking as the chief guest of the inaugural function, Shyamkumar said that he is hopeful that organic pineapple processing unit will be able to generate jobs. He advised the proprietors of the various processing units in the state to maintain the quality of the products so that the demand of the products increases.
Stating that the officials of the Horticulture and Soil Conservation department are always ready to guide the farmers of the state, he said that the opening of such processing unit in the state will ease unemployment issue thus helping in income generation.
Appealing to the people to plant trees to combat climate change, he said planting fruit bearing trees and flowers will also help in income generation. He also lauded the people of Kakching district and described them as hard working. He further said that for the upcoming Van Mohatsav, the Forest and Environment department is ready with 30 lakh saplings.
Special guest of the function, MLA Kakching, Surchandra Singh observed that, as white collar jobs are less in number and rate of unemployment is increasing, the focus should be changed for job creation.
He said the horticulture and floriculture have a huge potential for income generation. He advised that fruit bearing trees can be planted in the hillocks of various districts for income generation to benefit the farmers of the state and youths can be taught techniques used in the food processing industry.
He said change is needed in the education system so that value added lessons can be taught to younger generations which can help them to independently create jobs later in their life.
Principal secretary (Horticulture and Soil Conservation), JC Ramthanga said that in the past few years the department, especially the MOMA have been doing good works. He said that the joint secretary of the ministry while visiting the state for review meeting informed that MOMA has performed the best among all the Northeastern States. Stating that Meira Foods has been associated with the department earlier, he said the association is a success story.
Director, Horticulture and Soil Conservation department, K. Kipgen observed that the horticulture produces of the state are unique in taste. He encouraged the processing units to maintain quality of the products while processing and packaging. He said MOMA is trying to promote more processing units and invited entrepreneurs to come up and contribute for the State.
Mission Director, MOMA, K. Debadutta Sarma in his key note address said that this is the second processing unit which is inaugurated under the MOMA after the Rima Foods at Khurai. The total project cost of the Meira Foods organic pineapple processing unit is Rs. 135 lakh with Rs. 67 lakh as government subsidy under the scheme and another Rs. 67 lakh as promoter’s share and bank loan.
The inaugural function was also attended by officials of Horticulture and Soil Conservation department, MOMA officials and staffs of the Meira Foods, residents of the Kuraopokpi among others.
