CPI, Congress demand fresh poll in more than 25 polling stationsIMPHAL | Apr 19
Pointing out huge malpractices and misconduct in the inner Manipur parliamentary constituency (IMPC) election which concluded yesterday, the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Congress party have demanded fresh polls in more than 25 polling stations of Heingang, Andro, Keirao and Thongju assembly constituencies, which are stronghold of BJP.
Speaking to media during a press conference held today at CPI office at Irawat Bhavan, CPI inner candidate, Dr M. Nara pointed out that massive impersonation and proxy voting has taken place in the four assembly segments, represented by ruling ministers and MLAs of BJP including chief minister N. Biren organised acts of booth capturing by BJP and its workers have taken place by way of intimidation to the polling agents of CPI and the voters on April 18 poll, he added.
The CPI inner candidate contended that in addition to booth capturing, voters bearing no identity cards as required together with the electoral slip cast their votes in many polling stations.
As such, he demanded that the poll conducted on April 18 be cancelled and fresh polls be conducted in polling stations of 2/1, 2/2, 2/3, 2/20, 2/23, 2/26, 2/27, 2/31, 2/32, 2/33 and 2/34 of Heingang assembly constituency; 6/10, 6/20 and 6/35 of Keirao assembly constituency, 5/24-Torban (A) of Thongju assembly constituency and 7/39-Nongbram, 7/40-Keithelmanbi, 7/41-Moirangpurel (A), 7/42-Tumukhong, 7/43-Moirangpurel (B) and 7/44-Itham of Andro assembly constituency.
Dr Nara further asserted that the party is demanding fresh poll after going through various evidences provided by polling agents including videos. Complaints have already been lodged to the returning officer, CEO and ECI with proper proofs, he added.
It is very unfortunate that the ruling party in the government is resorting to malpractices only to get votes. Such kind of criminal act is a big threat to the democratic process; he observed and questioned the BJP what is the wrong in people voting for their own choice, while adding that people’s mandate and right should be respected.
The CPI candidate maintained that the party also endorsed the demand of the Congress party to conduct fresh polls in polling stations where organised acts of booth capture by BJP workers were apparently seen.
Meanwhile, the INC inner candidate O. Nabakishore has also lodged a complaint to the returning officer demanding re-poll in 10 polling stations.
The complaint mentioned that in 2/23-Leirenjao Girls High School, VVPAT machine was displayed openly and one Ringo, who seemed to be police personnel allegedly attacked MPCC secretary, P Saratchandra. As such, he demanded fresh poll be conducted in 2/23 and 2/26 of Heingang assembly constituency.
He also demanded re-poll in 5/24 of Thongju assembly constituenc as mass proxy voting was witnessed.
In 6/6 Keirao assembly constituency, INC inner agent is not allowed to sit in the polling room by the MLA, in 6/10 EVM machine was damaged.
In polling stations 7/10, 7/38, 7/39 and 7/40 of Andro assembly constituency, massive malpractices were recorded through threatening and intimidation of INC agent, the complaint said.
It also added that in 22/12 polling station of Wangoi assembly constituency, the same non-functional EVM was used again.
As such, he demanded that fresh polls be conducted in the above polling stations.
