48 hours mass protest launched
JAC against custodial killing of Manjur, CVOs demand govt action, written assurance
IMPHAL | Apr 1
‘Joint action committee against the custodial killing of SM Manjur Ahmad, Police Constable’ has demanded that the case be handed over to CBI for investigation and it will deny any invitation for talks from the government unless assurance are publicly given in written form that the demands submitted by JAC and CVOs will be turned into action.
“The JAC announced a mass 48 hours protest which will begin from 6 pm in the evening today and conclude on 6 pm of April 3. If the demands are not fulfilled within the 48 hours, the JAC will launch different forms of agitations to deliver justice,” said president AMMOCOC, SM Jalal after a public meeting organised by the JAC was held at Orient Coaching Institute (OCI) Hatta.
He expressed his appreciation to the supporters who demanded justice and stated that there will be no misunderstandings between JAC and CVO’s as both will take up action inclusively. He appealed the organisations to move together without looking for political mileage so that a strong movement may be launched.
He said that Nando was admitted at JNIMS hospital due to some case of illness since November 24 2018. After seizing Nando’s mobile phone, contact numbers of many high profile officers along with photos including contact number of SP Jail were found, he stated.
“Why have they not arrested? Nando is an accused in many different cases, mainly the case of killing Baby Lungnila Elizabeth. He was admitted to JNIMS general ward for a long time. Was there any lapse of security? Why an accused was kept in general ward? Again, different mobile phones of Nando had been found from hospital including demand letters. During investigation, Nando’s father was charged and being kept in jail. Then why there was lapse of security set up guarding Nando ?” he questioned.
JAC received information that many persons wearing camouflage had visited Nando at hospital.
Upon investigation, it has come to light that some other security personnel also gave statements, he said. The most crucial point on the death of Manjur is that he was not the security of Nando, Manjur was given security for another person who had been allegedly involved in case of missing guns, he stated.
It is believed that Manjur was falsely charged in order to divert the involvement of higher officers. Suspension of JIC inspector is not enough to solve the matter, IO of case and involved higher officers are also responsible for the killing in custody, he said.
JSCC convenor, Mangjit Sarangthem said that killing of police personnel by the police themselves shows mistrust amongst them. Many cases are there which are yet to receive justice, he said. “let us take the case of Manjur’s death as important incident to prevent further killing. Let us unite and fight a strong agitation with large numbers of people by storming the place where Manjur was killed, he said.
SSUM president, Soraisham Yaima stated that there are many cases which have not received justice. There is no justice for the poor, there is only justice for the rich people even if they are in the wrong. He assured of extending support to any form of agitation.
JAC co-convenor, Miraj Shah stated that JAC of Manjur and people are demanding justice not government jobs or money from the state government. “How a cop was killed by other police personnel, that too by committing third degree torture illegally?” he questioned.
This was not the first case of custodial death, he said. Manjur is not a person who works against the state, he works for the protection of people. In fact, Manjur was not at all involved in Nando’s missing, he was having a conversation on chat with his VDF friend and that chat reached Nando, he said.
All of this information was forward to JIC by Manjur , he further said while questioning why police had not made any arrest of those police. It is very shocking and surprising that no police personnel have come forward for Manjur and raise voices for him, he said. If Manjur is being killed, another police personnel might be next, he stated while expressing his wonder why police personnel are so selfish and have not unity.
The occasion was attended by different CVO’s, student bodies, MANPAC and PAM members.
