Rahul Gandhi assures protection of identity of Manipuris
President of All India Congress Committee (AICC), Rahul Gandhi has assured that the Congress party will never allow the “unique identity, culture, history of the people of Manipur” to be jeopardised under any circumstances.
Rahul Gandhi provided the assurance in reference to the uprising by the people of Manipur and the Northeast against the BJP led government which tried to forcefully impose the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB), 2016. He was addressing a Congress party public meeting held in connection with the 17th Lok Sabha election.
Recollecting that the Congress party did not allow the contentious bill to be given passage at the Rajya Sabha recently, he gave the commitment that the Congress party will stand with the people of Northeast and Manipur, and fight in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to ensure that the CAB does not become a law. “If the need arises, the party will took out to the streets together with the people,” he asserted.
Rahul Gandhi also officially kicked off the election campaign for the Congress party for the 17th Lok Sabha election in the State during the public meeting held at Hapta Kangjeibung today.
Speaking at the occasion, the AICC president lambasted the Narendra Modi led NDA government for trying to impose a singular idea relevant in specific part of the country to the whole country. He contended that the BJP led government acted as if they own the whole country while questioning who gave the right to the BJP to act in such a manner.
Rahul Gandhi asserted that the efforts of the BJP-led NDA government to erase the history, culture and way of life of the people of Manipur by imposing legislations like the CAB will never be successful, while also affirming that the government do not even understand the idea of a nation like India. “The BJP government do not understand that every state has a voice, their own unique history and a passion; and India is all these states put together, not only Nagpur alone,” he remarked.
“Former Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh of the UPA government developed the strategy to connect the Northeast region to Asia and to the rest of the country in the form of ‘Look East Policy’; however, the change of the name to ‘Act East Policy’ by the NDA government has not resulted in any significant action towards implementing the policy,” Rahul Gandhi asserted while adding that no actions have been taken up by the BJP-led government except for snatching away the Special Area Status from the NE states.
He pointed out that the Congress-led UPA government gave special area status to the NE states as it is a unique part of India with its own unique challenges and difficulties. “The Congress party also gave an industrial policy dedicated for the northeast states; and this too, Narendra Modi government revoked and took it away from the people of NE,” he contended.
The Congress leader assured that the Congress party will reinstate the special status granted to the northeast states if it comes to power in the upcoming Lok Sabha election while also charging that BJP government does not understand how to run an education system. “This is the reason why they imposed someone who knows nothing about education, a completely mediocre man and incompetent vice chancellor at Manipur University,” Rahul Gandhi added.
Rahul Gandhi also expressed his worries that most of the higher educational institutions in India has been jeopardised stating that “People, who only know how to put on shorts, hold a lathi and spread hatred are being made vice chancellors of universities across the nation by the BJP government.” He further denounced over the arrest of Manipuris by the government simply for expressing their sentiments, simply expressing what they feel. “The Congress party strongly condemned such act of BJP led government which crush the spirit of youngsters,” he continued while adding that the party encourage the people of Manipur to be free in expressing themselves and say what is in their hearts.
While ridiculing the Goods and Services Tax (GST) introduced by Narendra Modi as a means to loot money from small businessman and shopkeepers, Rahul Gandhi went on to term it as “Gabbar Singh Tax.”
The AICC president also committed that the ‘minimum income guarantee’ policy which will ensure that every citizen earns minimum income, will be introduced once the Congress comes to power while adding another commitment that the party will make Manipur a centre of job creation and manufacturing units and turn it into a historic bridge between Asia and India. “This should be the destiny of the Manipuris,” he added.
The AICC president went on to assert that there is an ideological war going on with the BJP and RSS on one side which want only one idea to rule India. While on the other side, is the Congress party which believes that every single person in India should be allowed to express himself and that every state has its own unique characteristics, he said.
While charging that Narendra Modi is a messenger of hatred and that he spread hate wherever he goes, the Congress leader contended that the Congress party will come out victorious in the 17th Sabha election.
During the meeting, former chief minister and Congress Legislature Party leader, O Ibobi also recalled that Narendra Modi during his election campaign visit in 2014 assured the Manipuris of corruption free governance. However, the current BJP led government is indulging in corruption practices in broad daylight and is even taking 30% of the share, he alleged while asserting the BJP led government both in the centre and state of following hypocritical politics. O Ibobi further asked the BJP workers to clarify on this matter by Mach 21 itself.
Referring to another assurance given by Modi that economic blockade will be lifted if the BJP comes to power, Ibobi charged that the economic blockade was arranged by Modi himself by teaming up with some groups. “It is a very shameful for a prime minister to be involved in such small minded political gimmicks,” he remarked.
The public meeting witnessed the attendance of MPCC president Gaikhangam; sitting Lok Sabha MP, Dr Th Meinya and sitting Rajya Sabha MP; Thangso Baite along and various party workers and NSUI members. Several opposition MLAs including TN Haokip and AK Mirabai amongst others also attended the meeting.
