‘Greenery Campaign, 2018’ will bring a green environment in Manipur: Homesh
In order to prevent the impact of deforestation, forest department has planted more than 100 saplings including fruit bearing trees under ‘A Greenery Campaign, 2018’ at Tonelok, Heingang reserve forest.
The campaign is organised by Sadar East Range under the aegis of department of forest, Manipur. Speaking to media persons, assistant conservator of forest and R.O. in charge of Sadar East Range, Elangbam Homesh said the campaigned was started on September 3, 2018 as a trial basis by the staffs of the department.
Under the campaign, more than 100 trees including fruit bearing trees have been planted at Tonelok, Heingang reserve forest. Any individual can plant tree at the reserve forest under some criteria. If any individual want to support the campaign they can plant tree but the individual have to enroll a membership at forest beat office, Heingang, he added.
During the enrolment the individual has to pay an enrollment fee of Rs. 300 and a monthly fee of Rs. 100 for the first one year. He member have to come every 3rd of the month to look after the tree that the individual has planted. If the tree seems to be death the member should inform the forest staffs and the staff will replace the same tree that the individual had planted or the staff will give treatment in order to make the tree healthy, said Homesh.
For every 50 trees a care taker will be assigned to look after the trees to avoid from foreign damage including forest fire, he said.
At present many organisations and individuals have organised tree plantation programme at various occasions, but due to improper care of the trees, most of the trees that were planted have been dead. If the trees are dead then there is no meaning for organising tree plantation programmes, he asserted.
Homesh appealed the people to support the campaign in order to regain the green environment where many organisations have been chanting to same environment. The campaign was started as a trial basis but the department aims to spread the campaign at various parts of the state in order to regain and to maintain a green environment, he added.
To promote the campaign Dollybi Hawaibam of Soibam Leikai, Imphal East planted a Gracinia Xanthochymus (locally known as Heibung) as a part of the celebration on her ‘heijingpot’ which held yesterday she plant the tree at the reserve forest and her family members also planted other six varieties of trees.
