Governor, CM, Speaker, others extend Nupi Lal messages

On the arrival of Nupi Lal which falls on December 12, State government officials have sent their warm wishes and messages to the people of Manipur.
Governor of Manipur, Najma Heptulla, in her message, stated that it is quite befitting to remember those large number of Manipuri women who fought against the oppressive economic and administrative policies of the then Manipur Maharaja and the British Government in Manipur in the year, 1939.
They stormed the State Durbar Office asking for immediate stoppage of rice export, in which around 21 women were injured from the bayonets and butts of soldiers’ weapons on December 12, 1939, it informed. The day remembered as Nupi Lal is indeed, an event of great significance in the history of the State, it stated.
The revolt of women against the monopolistic administration signifies the importance of women in the State and their role in the society, it further stated.
“I appeal to the people of Manipur to follow the path of these Manipuri mothers who stood up against injustice and fought for their rights for prosperous and peaceful State,” it added.
In his message, chief minister, N. Biren said, “I join the people of Manipur in paying tribute to the brave Imas (mothers) of Manipur who fought against the monopolistic policies of the colonial rule and came to fore for bringing socio-political reforms in the State. ” Nupi Lal was an occasion in which Manipuri Women exhibited to the world that they have the courage and spirit to challenge the then mightiest world power, the British, it said. The heroic struggle of Manipuri Women against the British is a rare occasion in the history of mankind, it added.
Speaker, Manipur Legislative Assembly, Y. Khemchand, in his message, said that Nupi Lal or Women’s War is an exceptional historic event fought twice in Manipur by the Women Folk of Manipur. The Manipuri Women Folk Waged two Wars in 1904 and in 1939 against mass exploitation and artificial famine triggered by the British Imperialist, it said. “I earnestly hope that this historic day will remind us of the extraordinary courage and sacrifice made by our mothers of the current generation and for the prosperity of the people,” it added.
Works minister, Th. Biswajit and social welfare minister, Nemcha Kipgen also conveyed their warm messages and greetings on the occasion.
