Jiribam district library in deplorable condition
JIRIBAM | Aug 30 : The state of Jiribam District Library exists in a deplorable condition today with only two or three almirahs in the shed which serves as the building of the library.
Besides the almirahs, there are no other infrastructures in the library which is an indication of the lackadaisical attitude of the state government and indifference from the side of the public too.
It may be recalled that under severe pressure for several years from the public and media, the state government under Raja Ram Mohan Roy Foundation, Kolkata, had established the library in a small shed. In a hurried attempt, the library was formally inaugurated on October 9, 2015 by the chief librarian, government of Manipur.
On the other hand, Manipur Sahitya Parishad, Jiribam has been using the shed for its own purposes. In view of the prevailing situation, this may be regarded as a good initiative as the library will only be rendered useless without usage even though the Sahitya Parishad has not taken full responsibility of the library and the state government has not considered the matter fully.
In the year 2016, Jiribam was declared a full revenue district and a district should have all the prerequisite amenities which include a district library amongst others.
More importantly, there is a building in construction just adjacent to the library hut which was built under funds from Raja Ram Mohan Roy Foundation. The construction of the building is almost complete and it is considered that the new building will house the library.
Reports from October 30, 2015 indicated that construction work stopped abruptly after the pillars had been raised and under public pressure, construction commenced again.
However, the construction process has gone to a standstill again which is another example of lawlessness. Moreover, it is a huge loss for the people of Jiribam.
Meanwhile, North East India Development Party (NEIDP), Jiri District Committee has also decried the shabby conditions of the library. In view of the prevailing conditions, NEIDP, Jiri District Committee has made an appeal to the state government to investigate the matter and initiate developments of the library at the earliest. A release signed by media coordinator, NEIDP, Jiri District Committee, F Ahmed Sazbam warned that if the appeal goes unheeded then the party will take up various forms of agitations.
