The 10-day training programme on kouna (water reed) mat making which began from May 15 was concluded today at Sanamahi Laisang Irum Sanglen Lairembi Leikai, Jiribam, organised by Jiri Development Organisation (JDO) under the sponsorship of Senmitlon Sintha Chaokhat Lup, Jiri & Relief Foundation for the destitute, Imphal.
Today on the outset of the closing function an exhibition of the kouna-made materials which was manufactured during the training programme was displayed. The materials included kouna mat, bags, baskets, purse and flower bases.
The keynote address of the closing programme was delivered by W Nilamani Singh. In his speech he briefed about the quality of reed (kouna) made materials. He added kouna is a special kind of water reed found only in Manipur and useful in manufacturing materials like mat, basket, flower base and so on.
