An ailing 64 year old woman from Somrei village of Ukhrul district who was allegedly raped by a man from Mayai Keithel while she was out on the paddy field on June 17, 2013 has today demanded that she wants justice before she closes her eyes permanently.

She narrated to reporters at her residence that on that fateful day, the accused, Md. Sanayai approached her in the isolated paddy field in an excuse that he was searching for his lost cow. And after raping her, she alleged that he had also kept Rs.10000 in her pocket.

The accused was later arrested by the police and an FIR was lodged at Yairipok police station. He is currently in jail.

A member of Women Action for Development in the village area handling this case said that the case has been going on for so long and it is because the accused family changed their lawyer too often. The hearing of the case which was to be held on August 2 is postponed again on August 16, she added.

The victim said that the incident had traumatised her and has been hospitalised for long and meanwhile she is also affected with breast cancer and could not do operation because of other ailments.

She demanded speedy trial. She further urged that she wants to get justice even today and questioned “what is the use of getting justice after I die”.

Her daughter (who does not want to be named) said that it has been almost four or five years that the case has been pending in the court of Thoubal. To give her satisfaction, we want the case to speed up and pronounce the final judgement.
